Embracing Every Stage of Change

Do you ever make New Year’s resolutions that fizzle out within weeks? Before setting new goals, it’s crucial to understand your readiness for change. As the saying goes, “In this world, you’re either growing or dying. Get in motion and grow.” -Lou Holtz

Just like a flower, as long as you’re alive, you have the potential to grow—through life’s experiences or through planned changes. Understanding the stages of change can significantly boost your personal development. Here’s a breakdown of the five stages:

1. Precontemplation

In this stage, you’re not yet considering change. You might be unaware of the impact of your behavior or resistant to the idea of change. Precontemplation can look like denial, lack of insight, and/or resistance.

To develop change in this stage one must, build awareness, gather information on the issue at hand, and self-reflect. Additionally, explore the pros and cons of changing your behavior.

2. Contemplation

In this stage, you’re beginning to recognize the need for change and are weighing the benefits and drawbacks. However, you haven’t taken concrete steps toward action yet. You may feel uncertainty or have thoughtful consideration with increased self-awareness.

To develop change in this stage one must, focus on resolving your doubts and enhancing motivation. Set small, achievable goals to build momentum. Examine your core values, discuss the effects of your current behavior with a trusted individual, and construct a detailed change plan.

3. Preparation

In this stage, you’re ready to take action and are actively planning how to do so. You have established goal setting, strategic planning and gathered resources.

To develop change in this stage one must, develop a detailed, step-by-step action plan. Identify necessary resources and support systems and anticipate potential challenges. Ensure your goals are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound).

4. Action

In this stage, you’re actively implementing your change plan and working to adjust your behavior. You will need to be intentional in this process, engaged, persistent, and modify behavior as needed.

To develop change in this stage one must, seek support, track progress, and reinforce positive changes. You should implement regular check-ins with a therapist or accountability partner, make necessary adjustments to your plan, and celebrate your successes, even the small ones.

5. Maintenance

In this stage, you’re focused on sustaining the changes you’ve made and managing ongoing challenges. Be consistent, resilient and practice effective coping strategies daily or when needed.

To develop change in this stage one must, maintain ongoing support, develop strategies to prevent relapse, and strengthen new behaviors.

The journey of transformation can be both daunting and enlightening. No matter where you are in developing healthier habits, it’s important to recognize your stage of readiness. This awareness isn’t meant to overwhelm you but to help you tailor your approach for making and sustaining changes.

Remember, change is inevitable, and transformation is a process. It’s natural to encounter setbacks, but the key is to keep moving forward. No matter how many times you stumble, always get back up and continue your path toward growth.
